Helping A Hero

Helping A Hero

posted in: LifeStyle 30

A few years ago a friend needed help with a charity event. The gala was for Helping A Hero a not-for-profit organization that helps wounded veterans realize their dreams of home ownership. That night I heard three serviceman talk about their inquires and how grateful they were to be in a house that is adapted to their injuries. Ever since then I have volunteered for this great organization.

“Empowering Wounded Heroes, One Home at a Time,”

Helping a Hero is a non profit, non-partisan organization, founded in 2006, that provides support for military personnel severely injured in the war on terror. It provides specially adapted homes for qualifying service members through partnerships made with the builders, developers, communities, and the veteran.

Helping A HeroHelping A Hero is the 2nd largest national organization building homes for our severely wounded heroes injured in theater during the War on Terror. The organization is dedicated to building adapted homes for our heroes who are missing limbs, are paraplegics, quadriplegics, severe burn victims, etc.

The goal is to provide homes to our wounded heroes and equip them to transition successfully into their local community and to provide the tools they need to succeed in life.

They build specially adapted homes that allow wounded warriors to be as independent as possible. The homes are often built in planned communities where they receive ongoing support from neighbors, the Home Owners Association, other military organizations and their local Rotary Club or other service organizations. They also provide additional support programs such as marriage retreats, caregiver retreats, recreational activities, emotional support, and financial support.

 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

It takes many volunteers to make this organization a success, today at the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon a few were honored. The Lee Greenwood Award was given to Roger Clemens one of the most dominant pitchers in major league history pitching 24 seasons in MLB for four teams: Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Houston Astros.

Helping A HeroRoger Clemens was selected to receive The Lee Greenwood Award from Helping a Hero for his tireless support for our military throughout his career and in retirement.

For the past 6 years, Roger has been a major supporter of Helping a Hero. He has participated in multiple Groundbreaking and Welcome Home Ceremonies and has donated numerous auction items for our Gala, funding multiple homes for our wounded warriors.

He has also partnered with Helping a Hero to recognize Blue Star Moms and Gold Star families.

Roger and Debbie Clemens formed The Roger Clemens Foundation in 1992 and have donated millions of dollars to charities primarily helping at risk children.

The Rocket often supports charity by playing in celebrity golf and softball tournaments. Recently he pitched to JJ Watt at the JJ Watt Celebrity Softball Game and received a standing ovation from the packed house at Minute Maid. The Clemens put a high priority on family and prioritize spending time with their 4 sons.

Since their founding in 2006, Helping A Hero’s Wounded Warrior Home Program has awarded 100 homes in 22 states to deserving heroes, making them the second largest national organization that builds homes for wounded veterans and their families.

Helping A Hero is currently planning welcome home ceremonies for veterans in Oklahoma, Missouri and New York.

      Kori,
Volunteering at your local VA hospital is a great way to support our veterans. Helping A Hero can always use more volunteers, I included the link in the post.
