Love Geraniums

Love Geraniums

If you’re looking for a plant that offers plenty of blooms in a large variety of colors, geraniums are a great choice.

I grow geraniums-love them in containers but they also do well in window boxes, flower beds and hanging baskets really anywhere you plant them.  I live in Texas where the summers are very hot and we get a few winter frost. Another reason I love geraniums they bloom beautiful clusters of flowers all summer and even in the winter. They  bring me joy during the gloomy days of winter.

I don’t have a green thumb but Geraniums sure make me feel like I do. That’s why it’s my favorite plant they make it so easy for me to take care of them. Geraniums remind me of my great grand mother, she had them planted everywhere. This was back in the 70’s you didn’t go to a nursery to buy flowers instead you got roots from your neighbors. Then once your plants grew you would share it with someone else.

When: I wait to clean out my flower beds and trim tress as well and plant the week before Easter. There has been a couple of years were I was inpatient and a late frost came thru and killed my plants.

Where:  They thrive in full sun but if you live in a very hot climate, find a place where they’ll get some afternoon shade.

Watering:  If it hasn’t rained, I water twice a week however in the heat of the summer it’s every other day. They don’t do well in sitting water so if planted in containers, be sure to provide drainage holes. They tolerate dry soil better then to much water so don’t over water them.

Tips:

  • I fertilizer in April, July, October and January
  • Geraniums love sun but the roots prefer a cool soil so add a layer of mulch
  • I do not bring my potted geraniums inside during the winter mainly because the pots are to heavy.  If you bring yours in make sure you place them in a location that gets plenty of sun.

Pinch off blooms as they fade (deadhead) this will produce lots more blossoms.

I love geraniums in colorful containers.  My containers are over 10 years old and they take a beating from the hot Texas sun.  Every few years I spray paint them and make them look new again. This is what the container looked like, before a new coat of paint.

I used 2 coats of Satin Aqua from Rust-Oleum and the Valspar clear sealer in Satin. I absolutely love this brand of spray paint, because it is so easy to use and does not run. Next I will spray paint my 10 year old lawn furniture.

I’m so thrilled with the end results! It’s much more colorful and I didn’t have to spend a ton of money to get a new look.
