I did my first ever 5k and of course it was at a winery! Figured if I was lucky enough to cross the finish line, a glass of wine would be a nice trophy.
In 2013 the very first Wicked Wine Run, created by Krys and Sam Davis, introduced a new concept of wine themed fun runs to the national racing scene. The concept was that anyone would be excited to participate in it whether avid runner, wine lover or food lover.
Wine and running enthusiasts have a choice of two races: a 5k run with complimentary wine at the finish or a 1k walk with four wine-tasting stops along the route. Participants also have the option to enjoy both events. Most vineyards also have a live band, food trucks and more wine.
Even before we sign up for the race my girlfriends and I had decided that we were not going to run, but ratter speed walk during the race. We got together a couple of times a week and walked our neighborhood trails. For us it was not about winning the race but ratter having fun. On race day the weather prediction was lots of rain. We got lucky, it did not start raining till a couple of hours after the race but it was very humid.
Runners are encouraged to dress up in funky costumes. We decided on t-shirts because we wanted to be conformable while running/walking. This was so much fun that we plan to do it again next year.
What better way to end a workout than with a celebratory glass of wine at the finish line?
