Amazing Bed Makeover

Amazing Bed Makeover

posted in: Home 23

The bed is the focal point of any bedroom…..this one is dramatic in style and presence.

After the divorce the master bedroom stayed the same for years….one day I woke up and thought it’s time for a change.  Figured if I placed a pink coverlet, sparkly pillows and a few pictures in the room it would be enough of a change. It wasn’t!

My next thought was to change the wall color. I painted the room a very pale pink called Soft Shoe from Behr. I love the color it makes the room look fresh. Then it was obvious that the room would basically always look the same due to the furniture!

Here is the before picture, never did care for the black rod iron. The  furniture is solid wood, it was purchase 20 year ago for our first home.

Amazing Bed Makeover Using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

I looked into buying new bedroom furniture, but it was way to expense. This is king size bed with a Tempur-pedic mattress that weights a ton.  It’s extremely comfortable and fits my body perfectly, so I decided to paint it.

Before we get started with all the painting details lets take a look at the finish product.

Amazing Bed MakeoverOne of the best discoveries I’ve ever made is chalk paint.  Annie Sloan chalk paint is very easy to work with. It rarely requires any preparation, such as sanding or priming and can be used on just about any surface. It’s easy, fun and gives me amazing results.

I was having a hard time deciding on a color because there was several I liked. Narrowed it down to Country grey ( looks cream) and Paris Gray.  One was to white the other to gray so I mixed them together.

If your going to mix colors, make sure you write down your formula in case you need more paint.  My was easy to remember equal parts Country Grey and Paris Grey.

I didn’t want to take the bed apart and move it to the garage, instead just placed cardboard around it.  I started by giving the bed 2 coats of paint.  I prefer ASCP brushes yes they are expense but well worth the money.  I applied Duck Egg paint inside the bed panels for added contrast. Then I distressed it using medium grit sand paper.

I know most ASCP painters will tell you to put a coat of clear wax on it first….but to me is does not get as smooth as I like it. Plus most ASCP painters also suggest using fine grit sand paper…..to me it takes longer and I prefer heavier distress marks.

Once your done sanding it’s very important to clean off all the sanding dust before you start waxing. It will become a total nightmare if you get sand dust in your wax….you will feel small gains on your furniture.  If this happens to you wait a day then sand off the entire wax area. Make sure to clean it well before you wax.

Always apply clear wax before dark wax

Last step Baroque Art Gilders Paste is a gilding wax that can be applied using your finger or brush in small areas. Gilders paste can be applied to most any surface to accent details. I applied it to the post, black iron, and inside the panels and finial.

Amazing Bed MakeoverIt’s hard to see all the details in these pictures….but I assure you the bed turned out beautiful! I feel fabulous laying in it.Amazing Bed MakeoverWill have the big master bedroom reveal at a later date… still working on a dresser, curtains,  sitting area and accessories.

      Rachel,
Annie Sloan chalk paint is very forgiving, if you don’t like the way it turns out, no problem just paint it again and you can mix the colors to get a custom look.
